Have a Successful Online Party by Avoiding These 4 Mistakes

You want to get new customers for your business and you decide to have an online party. 

This is a great opportunity to meet new people and sell some products, but it can be an epic fail if you don’t know how to successfully run one.

But don’t lose hope.

You can be an online socialite in no time with the advice outlined below.

The way someone sets up an online party is basically the same as a real party in person.

You decide on a date and time for the event, create the event on Facebook through your personal or business profile page, and you invite people to attend (or you have a host and ask them to invite their friends).

I was recently invited to one of these parties and I decided to participate to do some “market research.”

So from the comfort of my home, I logged in to the online party which was held over a 5 day period.

So, let’s jump right in and see what happened and how this party could have been dramatically improved with a few easy steps.

My friend from high school had invited me to the party, she was the host.  A lady that she knew was the person actually promoting the products and she was in charge of organizing the events and activities.

The first mistake that I noticed was that the organizer, or business owner, did not introduce herself to the group.

Imagine that you have a friend and they invite you to a party. You arrive at the house, ring the doorbell and someone opens the door. That person does not greet you or introduce themselves to you.

How would that make you feel?

Insignificant, awkward, and strange are a few words that come to mind.

Now back to the online party.

Okay, this is a virtual event, so why not use virtual technology to introduce yourself.

Post a short video.

This gives everyone the opportunity to see and hear who they may potentially do business with.

They get to see who you are, hear the sincerity in your voice, and make an assessment of you as a person. By appealing to an individual’s senses you can put them at ease. 

This is the start of building a trusting relationship.

At the beginning of the party, one of the attendees asked why the party was being held during a non-pay day week.

Having an online party during a non-pay day week can be problematic for some people.

I know personally, that for me it’s necessary to plan and budget when there will be additional money spent outside of what is typically allocated for expenses.

This will likely reduce the amount that people are willing to spend or it may eliminate the possibility all together.

The next snafu was committed by the host when she commented, “Get our your credit cards.” 

Now, imagine again that this is a real live party. You have just walked through the door with the friend who invited you and the hostess says to you, “Get out your credit card.”

The next area of concern was the event posting strategy.

The organizer created a firing squad by just blasting the page with product after product after product without any attempt to get to know the guests.

Okay, take another mental walk with me and imagine that this is a live and in person party…

You walk into the house, the person who opens the door does not introduce themselves, they hand you a catalog and they walk away.

Where is the most important part of a social gathering? The SOCIAL part.

You may ask, “How can I create a social experience without being face-to-face with someone?”

“What can I do to increase engagement at a virtual event like this?”

Well, it’s the same way that you would try to get to know someone in person or over the phone. Just ask questions.

Get to know who is attending so that you can tailor solutions (ahem…your products) to those people.

Ask things like…

Where is everyone joining from?

Who has young kids?

What’s your favorite recipe or favorite food?

Who loves breakfast?

Your questions should be geared towards a genuine effort to get to know your guests and also targeted so that you can offer the best suited products or services.

Then, help people make a connection between what you offer and how it can help make their lives better or alleviate a problem.

It is imperative that you realize that selling products is all about building relationships with people.

People want to buy from people, not companies.

Building relationships takes time, but it’s always worth it to show interest in others and not be solely focused on your own needs.

You may not get the sale this time, but if you provide a fun and unforgettable experience, people will remember YOU and how you made them feel.

The next time they run into a problem, they will think of you as their solution.

By helping potential customers identify problems, struggles, or challenges you can assist in providing solutions.

This can be done through asking questions. However, in order to get responses you must have also done the other things mentioned above. Creating connections is key.

People will be more likely to engage in answering your questions if you have first built a relationship. 

Here are a few sample questions (based on the products for this particular company) that can help you identify problems:

Who needs more dinner ideas?

Anyone need help eating healthier?

Who likes to bake and wants to make a new dessert?

When participants respond with a “YES” they are qualifying themselves and showing interest in what you have to offer.

You could also create a poll with various options. This is a quick and easy way to gather responses from the group.

This is another great place to employ a video. Do a demonstration of a recipe or show how easy it is to use one of the products.  You would be the star in your very own infomercial!

This demo could  be the key to reducing barriers of doubt or fear when investing in your product.
